How AI is Automating the Music Industry Back Office

MusicTech Insights #12 | Curated by Musicben (Benjamin James)

This issue is guest-curated by Benjamin James, founder of STVDIO (a research company and newsletter focused on the music technology industry). He is a former Billboard writer, major label artist, and consultant to some of the leading music tech companies.

In this edition, Benjamin explores how AI is moving beyond music generation and increasingly reshaping the infrastructure, workflows, and business operations that power the music industry.

How AI is Automating the Music Industry Back Office

Hi, I’m Ben.

Most conversations about AI in music focus on creative generation. Everyone has an opinion on Suno and the impact of generative AI on music creation.

But I believe one of the biggest opportunities lies elsewhere.

AI has the potential to help artists and their teams with the most time-consuming parts of running a music career: distribution, publishing administration, metadata management, royalty tracking, tour planning, release rollouts, and much more.

I've been experimenting with a product of my own that brings many of these elements together, and along the way I've discovered a number of platforms and tools worth paying attention to. Many of them already offer APIs or MCP integrations that can plug directly into your own products, workflows, or AI agents.

While much of the industry is focused on debating generative music, I suspect the tools featured below will have an even greater impact by quietly transforming how the music business operates behind the scenes.

ONCE: AI Distribution

ONCE is an AI-powered music distribution agent that uses natural language to guide artists through the release process. Instead of filling out complex forms, users simply describe their release, and ONCE handles the submission to platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

The platform also includes a publishing agent that can automatically register works and populate publishing metadata, reducing much of the administrative work that typically slows down releases.

RECOUP: AI Record Label

RECOUP is an AI operating system built for record labels and music companies. It helps teams monitor artist performance, generate tailored release strategies, estimate catalog value, and create marketing content across multiple channels.

Designed to fit into existing workflows, RECOUP can integrate directly with AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT, making it easier for teams to access insights and automate day-to-day decision-making.

UNISOUND: AI Publishing

UNISOUND develops AI-powered publishing administration tools that help rights holders manage registrations, identify missing royalties, and improve royalty collection across global markets.

By automating many of the manual processes involved in music publishing, the platform aims to make rights management more efficient and transparent. According to the company, its technology has already helped recover more than $8 million in previously unclaimed royalties this year.

NEURAL FRAMES: AI Video Content

Neural Frames helps artists generate video content that responds directly to their music. By uploading a track, users can create visuals that sync with the sound and evolve alongside the music.

The platform can be used to produce music videos, social media content, visualizers, and promotional assets, giving artists and their teams a faster way to create engaging visual content around a release.
